Contribution to environmental relief
It can be roughly assumed that 3 tons of CO² are released per ton of PET incinerated. According to the Federal Environment Agency, around 53% of all plastic waste in Germany is currently utilised for energy recovery. Assuming that this is also roughly the case for the residual PET by-products described above, around 25,000 tons of PET waste from food packaging are recycled for energy every year in Germany. This corresponds to annual CO² emissions of 75,000 tonnes.
In total, around 270,000 tons of CO² are released annually in Germany due to the PET residual by-products from food packaging that are currently not recycled horizontally. A scaling to the industrialised and emerging countries even results in CO² emissions of 12.4 million tons per year.
